If I had to pick a label to give a best of 2008 award to, It’d probably be a toss up between Mute and 4AD, with Matador, In the Red, and XL recordings trailing closely behind them. Latest from Mute Records: upcoming release from legendary new wavers Depeche Mode, and tour dates in 2009. EPIC. I saw Depeche Mode once, in like 2000 or 2001 - my friend called me up at the last second to ask me to meet him at the staples center in like an hour or two to use his leftover VIP ticket. They were playing with Poe.
Was anyone planning to mention that Beach House was playing in LA next week? I mean, there are seriously WAY too many decent shows coming up within the next four weeks, and I will probably have to miss some of them but not this one! Jeesh! I’m glad I found it. Beach House are about [...]
Everyone’s favorite sisters have scheduled 6 live shows in November - the first since 2006, I think. Unfortunately all shows will be at the House of Blues, but still - The Sisters of Mercy?! Are you kidding?!?! In the words of my roommate, “Do you think this means Andrew will wear Mickey Mouse ears?! Oh, lordy lordy lordy… I think this is one of those signs the world is ending.. Like soon.” What she means: 2008 has already given us (when I say ‘us’ I mean L.A. - not to exclude, sorry) Portishe
Ok I’ll admit it. This whole post started here, on You Ain’t No Picasso, but it somehow turned into something completely different so while I think YANP for the Intelligence track that totally slays one of the crappiest tracks on the entire Magnetic Fields’ “69 Love Songs” boxed set, which I love, srsly I do…I have only myself and my wreckless sleep deprivation to thank for the final outcome. Which isn’t very terrific anyway. Except for the songs you can grab below and all the gnarly tour
Back in April I mentioned that Brian Eno and David Byrne had finished their second collborative effort and planned to tour late in 2008. The album, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today will hit the virtual shelves as DRM-free MP3’s on the 18th of August, and a tour will follow it. This is amazing and LONG over-due. (Their only other collaboration, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, was released over 20 years ago now.)

Reach for an enema boys because Ssion is invading bars all across the America and making their west coast debut this fall. Judging by their pictures and their sound… they are hungry!! If you don’t know who Ssion is well you’ve been missing out on some hot, flavorful, colorful tracks. Glass Candy has remixed one of their tracks, you can see the video for it riiight here:
You can hear some of their tracks on the Ssion MySpace page, which boasts one of the largest line ups I’ve seen sin
Clara Engel this total babe who lives in Toronto. I’ve been watching her via myspace for awhile now and I must admit - I have remained pretty smitten, but I’ve been trying to keep her as a secret because her songs are really intimate and my smitten-ness is very near the borderline of becoming a serious crush. Her songs range from gritty, dirty, despair-filled love ballads (complete with necessary and melodramatic brooding) to straight up depictions of S & M fantasties. She is awesome and insp
This is just another one of the kinda awesome things that the dude from Fall Out Boy is up to. The show’s called FNMTV (FN, because it airs on “Friday Night” and, obviously, it’s short for everyone’s favorite 4-letter-word-turned-gerund-turned-adjective. Punny.) and it features music videos and exclusive live performances from upcoming artists that you may (or may not) have heard about. Before I saw this videoo, I would’ve been pretty sure that the general MTV audience, and even Mr. Simpson
Todd Rundgren played a show in SF tonight. He played lots of new songs from his forthcoming album Arena (2008), you can hear some of the tracks from his new album on his myspace page. It was two hours of classic rock, he tried to do some jump kicks that almost worked, toward the end he took off his shirt and displayed his aging pasty white body, lots of funny commentary inbetween songs and the crowd ranged from young blond screaming girls to really old fat conservative men to devout middle aged rocker
